Brief Biography
Chief Rector has been employed with the Bakersfield Police Department since 1982. He has worked a variety of areas including Patrol, Training, Vice/Narcotics, and Juvenile/Sex Crimes. Rector was promoted to assistant chief in 1999 and served in that position for five years. At 44, Bill Rector will be one of the youngest police chief’s in the history of the Bakersfield Police Department. Rector was selected by City Manager Alan Tandy to replace Eric Matlock, who retired June 11, 2004. He will be the city’s 17th police chief.

Chief Rector has a B.S. Degree in Criminology and an M.A. Degree in Family Counseling. He is also a graduate of the P.D.S.T. Command College.

Agency Description
The Bakersfield Police Department is dedicated to the delivery of quality professional service in all activities that promote community safety, security, and public trust. Their goal is to provide for the safety and welfare of the citizens of Bakersfield utilizing effective law enforcement systems, including crime prevention, patrol and traffic enforcement, criminal investigation follow-up, crime analysis, vice and narcotic enforcement, gang suppression and community relations.

The Bakersfield Police Department is commanded by Chief, William Rector and Assistant Chief, Bryan Lynn. The Department is comprised of three divisions, Operations, Investigations and Support Services. Each division is overseen by one of the Department's four Captains. The fourth Captain oversees operations for the West Side Substation. There are currently 294 sworn police officer personnel and 121 non-sworn personnel employed by the department. In addition to the main police facility in downtown Bakersfield there are two Bakersfield Police Satellite Offices in operation servicing the communities in East and Southwest Bakersfield.
