Kern County Network for Children
Court Appointed Special Advocates
Each of the 31 glowing candles at The Marketplace fountain in southwest Bakersfield represented 100 children. The children are victims of abuse, neglect or molest by their caretakers. The candles were shaped to form a burning heart.
CASA holds the candle lighting ceremony each April to honor its roughly 200 volunteers in Kern County, organizers said. It also lets the community know about the program. Many people don't even know about the program, and CASA is always looking for new volunteers. The organization desperately needs volunteers in the eastern Kern County for Ridgecrest and Lake Isabella.
After training, the volunteers speak for children throughout the court process. CASA advocates provide great information to the court and provide a constant face for children in the system. For more information on CASA of Kern County, call (661) 631-2272.
