Veterans for a Better Community
Commit to Life Program is Committed to Local High School Graduates!

The Vietnam Veterans of America Local Chapter 536's Commit to Life Program, the Kern High School District and the Kern County Network for Children strive to ensure that any graduating high school senior who has made positive choices has every opportunity to participate in their high school graduation ceremonies. This year they received double the number of requests from schools identifying students in need. It was due to the community that they were able to meet the increase in requests that totaled over $6,000.
The requests came from twelve Kern High School District Schools and a total of 81 students identified by their school counselor as an exemplary student who lacked the financial resources to fully participate in graduation activities were assisted. Many would have not had the opportunity to walk across the stage in a cap and gown, have their year book signed by their best friend, proudly wear a class ring or participate in their school’s senior trip without the veteran’s assistance. Vernon Valenzuela, President of the Vietnam Veterans Chapter 536, made a commitment that no student in need would be denied an opportunity to participate and he held true to his promise once again. The Vietnam Veterans hope that these students will always remember that someone cared, and that they will find the courage to commit to life and someday give back to someone else in need.
Plans for raising funds to support seniors in need next year have already begun. Each year the Commit to Life Golf Tournament is held and proceeds go to cover the cost of purchasing caps and gowns, class rings, yearbooks and grad-night trips. This year the golf tournament will be held on November 4, 2002. For more information call Vernon Valenzuela at (661) 325-4177.
