Educational Advocacy

FYS assists with record transfers and expedites enrollment of foster youth into education programs that meet their needs.

FYS Goals

  • Improve academic achievement
  • Improve attendance
  • Reduce discipline problems

FYS Peer Mentors

Emancipated Youth who have aged out of the foster care system can relate to current foster students, and also understand their educational barriers. In an effort to increase academic success and graduation rates, and decrease truancy and behavior issues, FYS has employed Emancipated Foster Youth to provide educational support, resources and appropriate support resources for students at risk of failing in school.

School To Work

FYS collaborates with the Kern High School District Career Resource Center, and neighboring group homes, to coordinate a career program designed for foster youth called Project Success. The program is a mixture of classroom curriculum and on the job training. Project Success is a paid work program that enables youth to learn the importance of getting an education and establishing a career.

Higher Education

FYS links foster youth with vocational training, academic counselors and college advisors throughout the year.

FYS works with the local college and university to establish a network of resources for foster youth in the financial aid office and outreach centers.

Enrichment Activities

FYS offers foster youth opportunities to participate in, and/or assist in the planning of worthwhile youth events; such as:
  • Independent City (Oct/Nov)
  • Leaders in Life Youth Conference (March)

Participation in these events allow for valuable leadership experiences and social building skills.
