Project D.R.E.A.M.

Project D.R.E.A.M. improves the quality of education for Kern foster youth through tutoring and mentoring. Foster Youth Services (FYS) & Cal State University of Bakersfield (CSUB) want to provide YOU with a worthwhile educational experience that will help you succeed in school and in life.

We provide junior high and high school youth residing in group homes with a fun atmosphere on a college campus where they can meet with a student tutor from CSUB and get assistance with

  • Math
  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Science
  • Homework Help
  • Studying for Exams
  • CAHSEE Exit Exam
  • College Planning

Formal tutoring programs like Project D.R.E.A.M. have been shown to be one of the most effective approaches to stabilizing educational transitions for children in foster care. In fact, students who participated in Project D.R.E.A.M. last year showed an average academic gain of one year and three months in six months of tutoring. These students also showed tremendous gains in their STAR math and reading results.

There will be opportunities for one-to-one mentoring, incentives, a chance to tour the campus and a reward for completion of the program in June!

Interested In Becoming A Tutor?
Tutors are imperative to the success of Project D.R.E.A.M.. Tutors not only guide the youth toward a path of learning but they also establish important relationships which translate into real stability, progress and success. Over the past three years, Project D.R.E.A.M. has seen a steady increase in the test scores of repeat youth in the program, and a slow decline of placement changes in repeat youth who are tutored year after year.

Tutors are responsible for:

  • 4 hours of tutoring per week
  • Quarterly STAR testing
  • Quarterly Progress Reports/Transcripts
  • Establishing Reading & Math Practicum
  • Attending bi-monthly meetings
  • Working with teachers to streamline homework
  • Writing quarterly progress reports to share with stakeholders

As a part of the program, each tutor will receive 1 hour of prep time for every 4 hrs of service and will be paid for every monthly meeting attended. Each tutor is assigned a laptop and printer which can be used not only for STAR testing and tracking, but also for utilizing resources like Brainchild Math Software and internet resources.

The tutoring year runs from September – May and follows all scheduled school holidays. Most tutoring occurs in the Walter Stiern Library at CSU Bakersfield. Alternate locations include Bakersfield College and the Beale Library.
